Your show host Robert and special guest Janet Guthrie. Janet has the distinction of being the first woman to compete in the Indianapolis 500. Janet Guthrie was always an adventurer. She began flying at age 15, Her father worked for Eastern Airlines and was a pilot. After graduating from the University of Michigan with a degree in physics, she went to work for an aeronautical firm. It was during that time that she bought her first sports car, a Jaguar XK 120 FHC and began club racing. By 1964, she was competing and won two Sports Car Club of America races. In the early 1970s, she decided to dedicate herself exclusively to car racing. She became the first woman to compete in a Winston Cup stock car race in 1976. In 1977 she made history again as the first woman to race in the Indianapolis 500 and the Daytona 500 in the same year. At Indianapolis she came in 29th place and at Daytona she finished in 12th place. In 1978, Janet returned to Indianapolis as a team owner and driver. Through the late 70's she competed again in NASCAR at Daytona. She continued racing through the mid 80's in various sports car events. Looking back, Janet has competed in Indy Car, IMSA, Trans- Am, Nascar and SCCA. She has had amazing successes in all venues. Today she travels to many automotive events. She also lectures and has written her autobiography “Life at Full Throttle”. Janet is truly a racer at heart.
