- Your show host Robert and special guest Bob Bondurant. Bob began flat tracking motorcycles on dirt ovals as a teenager in the mid 1950's. That experience led him to the next chapter of his life, sports car racing. He successfully campaigned his 1956 Corvette in a number of SCCA events eventually winning the West Coast Championship. In 1961 he drove another Corvette for Washburn Chevrolet where he again won championships. The big break came in 1963 when Carroll Shelby asked Bob to drive the legendary Cobra in a race. After winning some races for Shelby, he became one of the team drivers. Teaming up with Dan Gurney, Bob went on to win the 1965 World Manufacturers Championship for Carroll Shelby in the Shelby Daytona Coupe. Bob is the only American driver to win this championship for the U.S. in an American made car. That record still stands today. In 1965 Bob also drove the factory works Ferrari F1 in the United States Grand Prix at Watkins Glenn. In 1966 he drove in a number of F1 events in Europe. He also served as a technical advisor for the movie “Grand Prix” and coached actor James Garner in that movie. In 1967 Bob experienced a nearly crippling serious crash at Watkins Glenn while driving a Can-Am car. The steering shaft broke while racing at over 150 mph hurling the car end over end eight times. Following that crash, Bob decided to put his knowledge to work and start a high performance driving school. His first location was the historic Sears Point Raceway in Sonoma California. He still did some spot racing in off road and Nascar. Later he would move his driving school to Firebird Raceway in Phoenix Arizona in 1990. Today Bob continues operating one of the best driving schools in the world. He also vintage races with his Ford GT 40 replica similar to the real ones he raced in the day. He attends various car events around the world with his wife Pat.
