- Your show host Robert and special guest Arlen Ness. Like most guys in California, Arlen Ness started working on hot rods as a teenager in the Oakland/ San Francisco Bay Area. He soon took an interest in motorcycles and bought an old 1947 Harley Davidson Knucklehead and rebuilt and customized it. He then entered it in a show and won a trophy and some prize money. He reinvested that money into his fledgling business. Soon people began to notice his work. Arlen started doing custom painting for customers. He took his only bike and re-customized it again and won another contest. In the 1970's Arlen established a reputation as a leading custom bike builder and earned the title “The Chopper King”. Later Arlen created his own style of bike with a long wheelbase and a low slung frame. Later, he built custom bikes for celebrities. His three most famous bikes are the “Ness-Stalgia” resembling a 1957 Chevy and “Smoothness” an Art Deco design resembling a vintage Bugatti race car and the “Mach-Ness”, a wild design sporting a jet helicopter engine. Today, Arlen operates Arlen Ness Motorcycles along with his daughter, son, grandson and a loyal staff. This new 64,000 square foot modern retail facility houses a repair shop and museum and the company sells custom bikes and parts. They also have a Victory Motorcycle franchise and a have recently signed up to sell Indian. Arlen was inducted into the Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 1992. Today, Arlen has a busy schedule traveling around the world promoting his products.
