Your show host Robert and special guest Don Garlits. I had the opportunity to interview "Big Daddy"Don Garlits at his annual "Rats and Rods" event. Don is the drag racer of drag racers. He began racing hot rods with flathead Fords in the late 40's and early 50's. He then built a flathead dragster and started winning races. In the late 50's he switched to Chrysler 392 Hemi power plants. In 1958 he and some friends built the Golden Triangle Drag Strip ("Twin City") west of Tampa, Florida. In the 60's Don's career took off, he drove some Super Stock cars and then set numerous records with his front engined 426 Hemi slingshots. In 1971 he pioneered the rear engined dragster which revolutionized the sport. He was always improving performance, speed and saftey. Today, Top Fuel dragsters with over 8000 hp can run over 330 mph in the 1/4 mile. Don has built over 42 dragsters and won 17 world championship titles. He has been voted the #1 Drag Racer for the last 50 years. In the 70's he also started the Museum of Drag Racing dedicated to the presevation and history of drag racing. Also at this location in Ocala, Florida he hosts many car functions thoughout the year.
